Meta has announced a new free Facebook verification program that allows eligible users to verify they are real people without paying for a Meta Verified subscription.

Previously, Meta introduced Meta Verified in February 2023, allowing Facebook and Instagram users to obtain the blue verification badge by paying a monthly subscription fee. That service remains available worldwide for users who want premium account features.
However, Meta has now launched a separate verification initiative that is completely free.
How the Free Verification Works
The new program uses facial recognition technology to confirm a user’s identity. Applicants are required to:
- Take a live selfie.
- Allow Meta to compare the selfie with their existing Facebook profile photos.
- Complete the verification process, which Meta says usually takes only a few minutes.
Once the identity check is successfully completed, users receive a verification tick next to their profile name across various Facebook services.
Who Can Apply?
According to Meta, the free verification program is available only to users who:
- Are 18 years of age or older.
- Successfully complete the selfie-based identity verification.
Is It the Same as the Blue Tick?
No.
The free verification tick is different from the paid Meta Verified blue badge. Instead of indicating a subscription, it simply confirms that the profile belongs to a real person.
Meta also clarifies that this verification does not guarantee that the person is trustworthy or notable. It only confirms the authenticity of the account holder’s identity.
Key Highlights
- Free identity verification for eligible Facebook users.
- Selfie-based facial recognition process.
- Verification completed within minutes.
- Available only for users aged 18 and above.
- Different from the paid Meta Verified blue badge.
- Confirms a real human profile, not public figure status or credibility.
As Meta continues improving account security and authenticity, this free verification program aims to reduce fake profiles and help users identify genuine accounts more easily.
